Global Entry vs TSA Pre-Check: Are They Worth It?

Perks of TSA Pre-Check

  • pass through airport security quicker and easier

  • no need to remove your shoes or belts for security

  • you can leave your liquids in your bag

  • able to use a shorter security line

  • great if you're traveling with kids or pets because they don't have to be screened as thoroughly either

If you're a frequent flier, it could be worth the cost. But if you don't travel often, or if you have to fly internationally, Global Entry might be a better option for you.

Global Entry is another program that lets travelers skip lines and move faster through customs when they arrive in the U.S., but it's only available for international trips. If you're planning on traveling internationally soon—or even if you're just thinking about it—I would highly recommend signing up.

You can apply for Global Entry if you are a frequent international traveler, or if you have an enhanced driver's license. All in all, it costs $100 to apply for Global Entry (and then an additional $15 every five years), and once approved, makes your life so much easier when traveling internationally. The application process takes about 45 minutes and includes an interview with a Customs & Border Protection official. Once approved, however, you'll get access to expedited screening at 15 airports across the country—including JFK, LAX, SFO, MIA and more—as well as all land border crossings into the United States from Canada or Mexico (wherever there's a Pre-Check lane).

Do you have a trip coming up? Let me know in the comments which one you would choose! Maybe it's both!

TSA Pre-Check and Global Entry are both programs that allow you to speed through security checkpoints at airports. But which one is better?

TSA Pre-Check is great for domestic travel. It is a program that allows approved travelers to pass through security faster and easier. When you're approved, you'll be able to go through an expedited screening process at participating airports, which means less time waiting in line and more time enjoying the fun stuff: shopping, restaurants, and lounges! Once you're approved, you will get a "Known Traveler Number" (KTN), which allows you to use the faster Pre-Check lanes when going through security at any airport.
